I had a lot of fun with these short stories centered around a mostly robot person who doesn't realize how human it is。 Murderbot is just loveable。 From it's love of binge-watching to it's frustration with humans and their annoying imperfections。 It's a fun book to read。This book is also full of creative， sci-fi themed explorations of LGBTQ+ characters and relationships （including Murderbot who is written as a nonbinary， asexual robot who doesn't prefer any human pronouns at all！） I had a lot of fun with these short stories centered around a mostly robot person who doesn't realize how human it is。 Murderbot is just loveable。 From it's love of binge-watching to it's frustration with humans and their annoying imperfections。 It's a fun book to read。This book is also full of creative， sci-fi themed explorations of LGBTQ+ characters and relationships （including Murderbot who is written as a nonbinary， asexual robot who doesn't prefer any human pronouns at all！） 。。。more

Killerbot ist eine SecurityUnit die Menschen vor Gefahren beschützen soll。Diesmal hat Killerbot einige Wissenschaftler als Klienten， die Rohstoffe auf einem Planeten erforschen wollen， aber es läuft so einiges schief。 Riesige Kreaturen lauern auf diesem Planeten und dann werden sie auch noch von einer anderen Organisation überfallen。Menschen， sie sind sowas von merkwürdig。Killerbot hat sein Chefmodul gehackt， doch das darf keiner wissen， denn sonst könnte er sich gleich selbst auf den Schrott we Killerbot ist eine SecurityUnit die Menschen vor Gefahren beschützen soll。Diesmal hat Killerbot einige Wissenschaftler als Klienten， die Rohstoffe auf einem Planeten erforschen wollen， aber es läuft so einiges schief。 Riesige Kreaturen lauern auf diesem Planeten und dann werden sie auch noch von einer anderen Organisation überfallen。Menschen， sie sind sowas von merkwürdig。Killerbot hat sein Chefmodul gehackt， doch das darf keiner wissen， denn sonst könnte er sich gleich selbst auf den Schrott werfen。 Am liebsten steckt Killerbot in seinem Ganzkörper Panzer und glotzt Serien。 Doch daran ist bei seinem derzeitigen Auftrag erstmal nicht zu denken。Dieses Buch ist ein Sammelband der ersten vier Bände über die SecUnit， die sich selbst Killerbot nennt。Den ersten Band habe ich gern gelesen， da war es noch amüsant， einen Roboter zu begleiten， der kein Mensch sein will， sich aber immer menschlicher verhält und selbst nicht so recht weiß， was er eigentlich will。 Teil eins war interessant und humorvoll。 Danach waren es mir zu viele Wiederholung und somit wurde es schnell langweilig。 Der Robot stolpert von einem Abenteuer ins nächste， aber es kam keine Spannung auf。 Für mich war es wie die erste Geschichte nur etwas anders verpackt。 Da es um einen Roboter ging， habe ich erwartet die drei Gesetze eines Roboters von Isaac Asimov wieder zu finden， das war leider nicht der Fall。 Hätte wohl auch nicht zu dieser Einheit von Roboter gepasst， aber ich hatte es lustig gefunden。Es war okay zum Lesen， aber mehr auch nicht。 Das nächste Buch um den Killerbot werde ich mir nicht besorgen， da mir in diesem Sammelband schon die Spannung gefehlt hat。 。。。more

Murder bot is a security unit gone rogue。 Pure Sci-Fi and sarcasm at its best。 I devoured these books。 Just a bit of language and military type warfare so maybe not for younger kids。 I loved this series。

Zwei Jahre nach dem Martha Wells‘ Reihe „The Murderbot Diaries“ alles an Preisen abgesahnt hat， was es im SF-Bereich gibt （Hugo Award， Locus Award， Nebula Award）， erschien in Deutschland im Heyne-Verlag ein Omnibus， der die vier ersten Novellen zu einem ca。 580 Seiten umfangreichen Buch zusammen bündelt。 Eine etwas unsägliche Entscheidung vom Heyne-Verlag …Irgendwo in der fernen Zukunft ist die Hauptfigur „Murderbot”， bzw deutsch: „Killerbot“， eine „SecUnit“， die von „der Firma“ als Sicherheitsk Zwei Jahre nach dem Martha Wells‘ Reihe „The Murderbot Diaries“ alles an Preisen abgesahnt hat， was es im SF-Bereich gibt （Hugo Award， Locus Award， Nebula Award）， erschien in Deutschland im Heyne-Verlag ein Omnibus， der die vier ersten Novellen zu einem ca。 580 Seiten umfangreichen Buch zusammen bündelt。 Eine etwas unsägliche Entscheidung vom Heyne-Verlag …Irgendwo in der fernen Zukunft ist die Hauptfigur „Murderbot”， bzw deutsch: „Killerbot“， eine „SecUnit“， die von „der Firma“ als Sicherheitskraft an Forschungsexpeditionen vermietet wird， um sie beim Erkunden von fremden Planeten vor Flora und Fauna zu schützen。 Killerbot ist ein Roboter mit menschlichen Bestandteilen， weswegen zum Beispiel Erinnerungen nicht komplett ausgelöscht werden können。 Und: Killerbot hat das Überwachungsmodul der Firma in seinem Kopf gehackt und agiert daher mit zunehmenden „Selbst-Bewusstsein“ und sarkatischen Beobachtungen über sich und Menschen。Die Autorin Wells entschied sich gegen eine philosophische Diskussion à la Bladerunner， Westworld et al。， über die Entwicklung von Bewusstsein in einer Maschine und bog stattdessen an der Ausfahrt „Unterhaltungsliteratur“ ab。 Killerbot begleitet eine Forschungsmission auf einen fremden Planeten。 Die Mission entgleitet komplett， als – Achtung！ SF-Roman-Fertigbaustein – ein Großkonzern versucht seine Pfründe zu sichern。 Die vier Novellen sind zwar in sich abgeschlossen， bilden aber einen Storybogen rund um Killerbot， die Forscher und bösen Großkonzerne。Als kleine Häppchen genossen， mag sich Killerbot noch gut lesen。 Aber mit Fortschreiten im Buch wiederholen sich die Spannungsbögen。 Man liest zum xten Mal von den Hackattacken und Medienkonsum Killerbots。 Der Sarkasmus und die Beobachtungen von Killerbot haben nicht die Tiefe， um als dickes Buch zu tragen。 So unterhaltsam es sich weglesen lässt， und die einzelnen Novellen sind ein guter „Page Turner“， aber in der von Heyne gewählten Darreichungsform wird es irgendwann ermüdend。 Es gibt einige Aspekte， die das Buch interessant machen。 So zum Beispiel die subtile Annäherung von Killerbot an das „Mensch-Sein“ – zuerst aus Tarnung， aber dann auch … aus emotionalen Gründen？ Dazu die Beschreibungen der Eigenarten einiger AIs und der Umgang mit den omnipräsenten Medien。 Man ahnt， dass Wells einiges mehr an World Building in Reserve hat， als sie leider raus lässt。 Doch leider bleibt es bei Gesellschaftsformen nur bei bloßen Andeutungen。 Wenn man mit „Killerbot“ nicht mehr als die Reiseflughöhe „Unterhaltung“ erreichen will， ist der Omnibus von Heyne ganz okay。 Größere Ambitionen werden zumindest mit Band 1 nicht befriedigt。 。。。more

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells: （The first four books All Systems Red， Artificial Condition， Rogue Protocol， Exit Strategy are all available in a boxed set， all in hardback） The first four books are rather small， novella length。 The next book Network Effect is larger， an actual novel， about twice the size of any of the earlier books。 Fugitive Telemetry， the most recent volume， reverts back to the smaller size。 Ms。 Wells has contracted for three more Murderbot books， one a year。A particula The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells: （The first four books All Systems Red， Artificial Condition， Rogue Protocol， Exit Strategy are all available in a boxed set， all in hardback） The first four books are rather small， novella length。 The next book Network Effect is larger， an actual novel， about twice the size of any of the earlier books。 Fugitive Telemetry， the most recent volume， reverts back to the smaller size。 Ms。 Wells has contracted for three more Murderbot books， one a year。A particularly attractive feature is Murderbot’s comments。 In the first book， the first paragraph is “I could have become a mass murderer after I hacked my governor module， but then I realized I could access the combined feed of entertainment channels carried on the company satellites。 It had been well over 35，000 hours or so since then， with still not much murdering， but probably， I don’t know， a little under 35，000 hours of movies， serials， books， plays， and music consumed。 As a heartless killing machine， I was a terrible failure。”Murderbot is a rogue security bot with no internal or exterior controls。 Rogue SecBots are a staple of horror shows， heroic SecBots sacrificing themselves to save humans are not depicted， even though that is what SecBots are made for， are made to do by their governor modules。 Murderbot’s memory was incompletely wiped; it cannot remember if it was responsible for a mass murder or was just a puppet; driven by guilt， it christens itself Murderbot。 Murderbot does not like humans very much， viewing them as a distraction from viewing its stolen entertainment at best and as a threat to its survival at worst。 In the first book， Murderbot is assigned to protect some researchers who come from a non-Corporate entity called Preservation。 These humans are different from Corporate humans who fear and hate it。 Although it no longer HAS to， it begins to put extra effort and thought into protecting these researchers from an unexpectedly lethal scenario。Murderbot has always been solitary， mistrusting other bots who would have to instantly report it if they suspected that it was a rogue， was free。 Once discovered， Murderbot would be killed on sight。 It is a cloned cyborg， incorporating a human brain in a very strong， very fast， very heavily armed humanoid robotic body mostly covered by human flesh which includes an all-too-expressive face which Murderbot STRONGLY prefers to keep behind armor。 It lacks， among other things， a digestive system， sexual organs， and a sex drive。 Murderbot does not like having human parts， does not like other bots。 As the series progresses， Murderbot grows， becoming more comfortable with humans， with its own humanity and with other bots， both those who， such as Comfort Bots （AKA SexBots）， have human parts and those who are entirely electronic。Human space is largely controlled by Corporations。 Bots， even bots which are actually smarter and more human than humans， are disposable （but expensive） appliances to everyone in Corporation space。 Most humans there are essentially slaves; while not as disposable as bots， they are mercilessly exploited。 The only restraints on Corporations are those which they impose on themselves for self-preservation， such as forbidding the mining of alien artifacts （which can kill humans by the planet-full or drive them mad） except by VERY careful professionals。 The Corporations are driven entirely by profit， so if they think they can get away with it， they will violate any of their own rules （including mining alien artifacts and murdering anyone who might expose them） to get more income。 They will data mine their customers， price gouge them， and blackmail them。 To prevent another Corporation from destroying them， they have battleships， combat bots and the far more deadly combat SecBots。 War is not considered profitable， but is sometimes necessary。I think this is an exploration of humanity from the outside。 Murderbot， the viewpoint character， begins to trust some humans， some bots as well as learning to trust and understand itself。 The focus on Murderbot and the other bots illuminates humanity。 Self-sacrifice （voluntary， not dictated by a governor module）， ruthless maternal instinct， friendship， loyalty， love， and hatred are all there， reflections of the best and the worst of their creators。I very much enjoy this series and look forward to the next book。 。。。more

Ho dovuto ragionare un attimo su cosa scrivere come recensione， visto che l'ho finito di leggere alle quattro di notte， e non è il momento migliore per scrivere alcunché。 Però oggettivamente "l'ho finito di leggere alle quattro di notte" è già una buona motivazione per dare cinque stelle xDMurderbot è probabilmente la protagonista più relatable di cui ho letto negli ultimi due o tre anni e ora ho un bisogno fisico di leggere anche i racconti successivi。 Ho dovuto ragionare un attimo su cosa scrivere come recensione， visto che l'ho finito di leggere alle quattro di notte， e non è il momento migliore per scrivere alcunché。 Però oggettivamente "l'ho finito di leggere alle quattro di notte" è già una buona motivazione per dare cinque stelle xDMurderbot è probabilmente la protagonista più relatable di cui ho letto negli ultimi due o tre anni e ora ho un bisogno fisico di leggere anche i racconti successivi。 。。。more

Diese Novellen-Sammlung von Martha Wells ist gar nicht so einfach zu bewerten。 Im großen und ganzen， ist es ein Riesen Spaß。 Der Ich-Erzähler ist der Killerbot， der sein Chefmodul gehackt hat， also nun ein Bewusstsein hat。 Der Killerbot hat kein Bock auf Menschen und will lieber Serien gucken， dass ist auch an sich alles lustig Also， Erzzählstimme passt， man liest es gerne womit sich dieser Killerbot， so herumschlagen muss， aber trotzdem hat diese Sammlung in der Mitte ein Hänger。Denn， was Marth Diese Novellen-Sammlung von Martha Wells ist gar nicht so einfach zu bewerten。 Im großen und ganzen， ist es ein Riesen Spaß。 Der Ich-Erzähler ist der Killerbot， der sein Chefmodul gehackt hat， also nun ein Bewusstsein hat。 Der Killerbot hat kein Bock auf Menschen und will lieber Serien gucken， dass ist auch an sich alles lustig Also， Erzzählstimme passt， man liest es gerne womit sich dieser Killerbot， so herumschlagen muss， aber trotzdem hat diese Sammlung in der Mitte ein Hänger。Denn， was Martha Wells schwäche hier ist， ist der Plot bzw。 auch die Gleichförmigkeit der Storys:Wissenschaftler sind auf Expedition， werden von einer großen Firma hinters licht geführt， aber zum Glück gibt es ja den Murderbot。 So in etwa funktioniert fast jede Novelle in dieser Sammlung， es macht natürlich trotzdem Spaß， weil der Killerbot sehr Humorvoll erzählt， aber auch die anderen Figuren wirken immer ein wenig Blass， bis auf wenige ausnahmen。Ein wenig Schade， dass aufgrund der starken Erzzählstimme， die Figuren und die Storys schwächeln。 。。。more

bot-piloted transports and watching my serials。So， robots and television？ Got it。 There is so much to love about Murderbot， it is almost sad that it hates humans so much （though， it has its reasons， to be sure。 It is always the smartest sentient in the room。 It can hack the hell out of any electronic system or thing。 And it always has a snarky comeback （that it will never say to your face， rather think to itself）。Murderbot is not the only great character。 There is cast of bots and humans that is constantly changing， and it is fun to see how Murderbot reacts to interacting with new beings。 One mainstay is a bot-piloted transport named Perihelion， whom Murderbot befriends and lovingly calls ART。 You might ask where it came up with that name。My giant Asshole Research Transport is too busy to complain at。Oh， I get it now！ Seriously， though， the interactions between Murderbot and ART are some of the most fun interactions in the whole series to keep an eye on。 If characters are the driving factor of a series， they need to be well-written， and Murderbot is one of the best I have ever encountered。PlotThe plot of the series is fascinating from the start， when we first meet Murderbot and learn that it is a rogue android who is pretending to fall in line as it was programmed。 It is a huge attention-grabber， and once Murderbot has ahold of you it does not let go （though， honestly， it probably wants to because you disgust it）。 This is a story of self-discovery more than anything， subtly inserted into a storyline full of action and information。The best part about the story is the fact that it is narrated by Murderbot， who is trying to find its place in the world。 As it discovers more and more about itself and the places and people around it， the reader experiences all of that right along with it。 I really enjoy how Murderbot describes everything it comes across and all of its actions and thoughts in extreme detail。 In other books I might complain about constant info dumping， but it does not feel that way with Murderbot。 It feels immersive。 This is a writing tactic that makes the story more intimate and demands the reader make a strong connection to the main character。 And Murderbot takes you for a ride。I will say I am happy that I read all 4 books in one shot， as opposed to one at a time。 Doing so allowed the narrative to feel like a cohesive， comprehensive storyline with mini， localized climaxes as part of larger， more gratifying story。 Had I read them all at release I might have felt less satisfied。 I would have still really been into it because Murderbot itself is so interesting， but I think it would have seemed less polished。You will have to read the books to find out if Murderbot lives up to its name，though。 Or you can always ask one of Murderbot’s human friends。Rami admitted， “We know it doesn’t sounds like a good idea to go to。”It was a great idea if you wanted to be murdered。That is maybe not such a good idea。 Any other thoughts on the matter？If you had to take care of humans， it was better to take of small soft ones who were nice to you and thought you were great because you kept preventing them from being murdered。See？ It does have a sensitive side。World BuildingThe world building was done in a really interesting way， exposing the reader to more micro than macro。 Wells makes a lot of deliberate choices here as to what to tell us – or have Murderbot tell us – and what not to reveal about this futuristic space world in that basically the reader gets only what it requires to continue the narrative。 The only pieces we get about the world at-large is what matters to the plot in the moment。 There is no big explanation of everything。We do， however， get constant descriptions and information about the world directly in front of us， and that is due to Murderbot needing to process that information to carry the story along。 Instead of saying “I hacked the bot’s communication system”， Murderbot tells us in detail: what kind of bot， what kind of system， and the details about the hack。 As I mentioned before， it is constant information， but that goes back to the intimacy of the story between the reader and Murderbot。 It always seems relevant and well-integrated and never feels overdone。ThemesThere are many themes that are explored in this series， starting with agency and self-discovery， as I mentioned before。 This is pretty heavily addressed throughout the story as Murderbot tries to figure out what to do with its newfound freedom。Another big theme for me is prejudice and discrimination。 Murderbot is the “other” in this world， and finds many people who are not happy with its freedom。 Everywhere it goes people give it strange looks and point their security cameras at it。 People shy away， afraid to get too close。 This is mainly due to the way SecUnits are portrayed in the media as ruthless killing machines。 People do not treat it as a person and almost never think about its feelings。 These issues are addressed mostly with humor and snark in the books， but I found myself at times feeling profoundly sad about it。 That comes across from Murderbot， as well， just in much more subtle ways。Final ThoughtsOverall， The Murderbot Diaries is so much fun！ It’s a snarky， grumpy， tv-watching android plus a lot of stupid humans and interesting robots。 It is often fast-paced， too， as Have finished reading "The Murderbot Diaries"， books 1-4 by Martha Wells， and I can strongly recommend this series。 Wells' use of humor is excellent， and her protagonist's opinions on the human race are hilarious。Her protagonist is a human/robot security cyborg self-named "Murderbot" （due to an unfortunate incident in its past） who is basically a slave， with a governor module that punishes it whenever it does anything its corporation "owners" don't like。 Once Murderbot hacked its governor module Have finished reading "The Murderbot Diaries"， books 1-4 by Martha Wells， and I can strongly recommend this series。 Wells' use of humor is excellent， and her protagonist's opinions on the human race are hilarious。Her protagonist is a human/robot security cyborg self-named "Murderbot" （due to an unfortunate incident in its past） who is basically a slave， with a governor module that punishes it whenever it does anything its corporation "owners" don't like。 Once Murderbot hacked its governor module， it decided that its priorities were a） to escape corporate punishment （being disassembled for your spare parts is no joke） by pretending to do its security job， and b） to sample and enjoy as many of the entertainment "feeds" it possibly can。 In short， it begins to grow as a human being。Things go well until it is assigned to a planetary exploration group that treats it as a （gasp） human being and it breaks its own rules by actually coming to care about them。Wells' humor and insight into the human condition are her strong points。 Her series is an excellent antidote for when Covid-19 and/or politics get you down。Go。 Read。 Enjoy！ 。。。more

Wer hätte gedacht das mir ein， sich selbst so genannter， "Killerbot" so ans Herz wachsen könnte。 Das "Tagebuch eines Killerbots" ist streng gesehen eine Sammlung von vier Novellen， die hier im Deutschen in einem Buch zusammengefasst wurden， was aus meiner Sicht auch sehr sinnvoll ist， da die Novellen eine zusammenhängende Geschichte erzählen und direkt aneinander anschließen。 Im Mittelpunkt steht Killerbot， eine SecurityUnit oder einfach gesprochen， ein Roboter der teils aus organischen， sowie a Wer hätte gedacht das mir ein， sich selbst so genannter， "Killerbot" so ans Herz wachsen könnte。 Das "Tagebuch eines Killerbots" ist streng gesehen eine Sammlung von vier Novellen， die hier im Deutschen in einem Buch zusammengefasst wurden， was aus meiner Sicht auch sehr sinnvoll ist， da die Novellen eine zusammenhängende Geschichte erzählen und direkt aneinander anschließen。 Im Mittelpunkt steht Killerbot， eine SecurityUnit oder einfach gesprochen， ein Roboter der teils aus organischen， sowie aus anorganischen Teilen besteht und deswegen teils Lebewesen， teils Maschine ist。 Seine Hauptaufgabe besteht darin Wissenschaftler bei ihren Erkundungen auf unerforschten Planeten zu begleiten und diese vor Gefahren zu schützen， seien es Kreaturen， die plötzlich aus dem Boden rausschießen oder einfach die Menschen selbst， die zur Gefahren werden können。 Direkt zu Beginn erfahren wir， dass es sich hier nicht um einen Roboter handelt， der stumpf Befehle befolgt， sondern aufgrund eines Hacks seines eigenen Systems nun eigene Entscheidungen treffen kann， was aber keiner wissen darf。 Warum？ Naja， weil eine SecurityUnit eine Art Kampfmaschine ist und es in der Vergangenheit fatale Auswirkungen hatte， als solche SecUnits plötzlich nicht mehr an Befehle gebunden waren。 Killerbot， so nennt sich die SecUnit nur selbst， nutzt ihre gehackte Freiheit aber nicht dafür einfach um sich herumzuschießen， sondern schaut lieber massenhaft Serien zwischen den Aufträgen und versucht die Menschen vor ihren eigenen Dummheiten zu bewahren。 Am liebsten tut sie dies aber in ihrem Panzer， in dem sie nicht auffällt。 Wo keiner sie bewusst sehen kann und sie nur als Maschine beachtet wird， welche treu ihre Aufgaben erledigt。 Sie ist auf der einen Seite fasziniert von den Menschen und hat einen starken Helfer- und Beschützerinstinkt。 Im Verlauf der Geschichte hätte sie die Möglichkeit gehabt ein freies Leben zu genießen， wo sie sich niemanden unterstellen und niemanden beschützen müsste und trotzdem landet sie immer wieder in Situation， wo sie genau das Gegenteil macht。Auf der anderen Seite möchte sich die SecUnit aber von den Menschen abkapseln und diesen nur in Form von fiktiven Figuren nah sein， wenn sie sich ihre Lieblingsserien anschaut。 Mir hat das Buch sehr gefallen， vor allem wegen der wunderbaren Hauptfigur， die so facettenreich ist。 Hier vereinen sich sehr viel Introvertiertheit， Sarkasmus， Pessimismus， aber auch Tapferkeit und Liebenswürdigkeit。 Auch die Nebenfiguren， die in der Geschichte zwar nicht sehr viel Raum einnehmen， konnte ich liebgewinnen und hoffe， dass diese in den nächsten Teilen wieder auftauchen。 （Am faszinierendsten waren die Nebenfiguren， die keine Menschen waren。） Die Handlung war für mich ehrlich gesagt fast zweitrangig， da diese mehr dazu diente die Charakterentwicklung der Hauptfigur voranzubringen。 Das einzige， womit ich mich schwer getan habe， war die Beschreibung der Welt bzw。 das Fachjargon das so ein SciFi-Weltraum-Roman mit sich bringt。 Das kann ich aber nicht dem Buch ankreiden， sondern eher mir selbst， weil ich bisher keine bis wenige Berührungspunkte mit dem Genre hatte。 Der nächste Teil der Reihe ist bereits vorbestellt und ich freue mich dann wieder in die Gedanken- und Abenteuerwelt des Killerbots eintauchen zu dürfen。 。。。more
